I like to compile lists of favorite
representative recipes each month. If there are enough of them, I’ll make a link
list to post in celebration. When I was making my list for October, I came up
with 31 recipes! “Wow!” said I. “That’s one for each day of the month.”
So, on social media (you can
follow me on Twitter and Facebook) I am posting an October recipe of the day. While
many recipes are right at home in the month of October, each of these was
published on these pages in October.
October 1: Homemade Applesauce.
Treat yourself to this. You deserve it.
October 2: Applesauce Cake with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting. If you don’t eat all the applesauce right away,
you can use it to make this cake.
October 3: Pumpkin Pie Spice.
I mean. Can you even function through the fall without it?
October 4: Apple Turnovers with Dried Fruit. I like craisins in the filling, but you can vary these to
taste. The cream cheese pastry that envelops that filling is also a great
recipe that is versatile, easy, and delicious.
October 5: Spinach and Feta Scones with Dill. A savory scone that is tender and popping with classic flavors.
October 6: Apple Cinnamon Coffeecake.
This recipe is quick and easy, the fastest way I know to get a made-from-scratch
cake in the oven for breakfast. The batter can also be portioned into muffin
cups. Just adjust the baking time.
October 7: Macaroni and Cheese with Roasted Poblanos and Smoked Paprika. This kicked-up mac and cheese
is smoky and spicy.
October 8: Black Bean Soup with Salsa. I love to throw this together at the drop of a hat. It can be made with
canned black beans or with beans cooked from dried. I’ve also been known to
substitute the salsa with its constituent ingredients, specifically tomatoes,
onions, and peppers.
October 9: Cheddar Jalapeno Scones. A deliciously spicy and cheesy accompaniment to the Black Bean Soup with
Salsa.
October 10: Chorizo and Chipotle Chili. My go-to meaty chili is rich, spicy, and smoky, too.
October 11: Poppy Seed and Plum Muffins with Almonds. Fruity and scented with almond, these muffins make
any weekend morning special.
October 12: Chard Soup with Cilantro and Lime. This soup is the Platonic ideal of the flavor of green.
October 13: Pizza. Endlessly
variable as anyone knows. I usually use the whole wheat version of the crust in
this post.
October 14: Pear Apple Crisp with Cardamom. Classically delicious with the added peppery zest of cardamom,
which goes oh so well with juicy pears.
October 15: Pasta with Sausage,Peppers, and Olives. A weeknight dinner with lots of flavor.
October 16: Oatmeal Date Cookies
with Cardamom. The exotic allure of dates and cardamom is pure alchemy. Add it
to an oatmeal cookie and it's heaven.
October 17: Glazed Apple Walnut Cake. This cake comes together quickly, but is packed with plenty of the fall
flavors of apples and cinnamon. Plus butter and sugar, of course.
